Matthews kept its downtown when Charlotte swallowed everything around it: Trade Street, the depot, and a few blocks of 1900s-to-1930s houses on John Street and the streets off it. Around that core, from Sardis Road and Highway 51 out to Weddington Road and Pleasant Plains, the housing is 1970s-to-1990s neighbourhoods - Sardis Forest, Brightmoor, Fairhaven, Windrow Estates, Stonehaven's Matthews side - on lots that were wooded when they were cut and are now under 50-year-old willow oaks and pines.
