Metal Roofing
Stone-coated steel is a galvanised steel panel with a stone-granule surface bonded in acrylic, pressed into tile, shake or shingle profiles. It gives you the look of a clay tile or a thick shake at a fraction of the weight, so no framing upgrade. The granule surface is quiet in rain and hides minor hail marks that would show on a smooth panel. It also holds algae and pollen more than a smooth Kynar panel, which matters under Charlotte's oaks and pines.
A 26-gauge galvanised or Galvalume steel panel, pressed into a tile, shake or shingle profile, coated with acrylic resin and then embedded with ceramic-coated stone granules - the same granules an asphalt shingle carries, bonded to a steel core that will not curl, crack or lose its shape. Panels interlock and fasten with concealed screws, either straight to the deck or onto battens depending on the profile. The result weighs about 1.5 pounds per square foot, against 9 to 12 for real clay or concrete tile, so it goes on a standard truss roof with no engineering.
The brick colonials and Georgians of SouthPark, Myers Park and Matthews, and the stone-fronted estates around Waxhaw and Weddington, were designed for a heavy, textured roof, and a smooth standing seam panel can look thin on them. Stone-coated steel gives that mass. It is also the quietest metal roof in rain, because the granule surface breaks up the drops, and its texture hides the small hail dimples that show on a flat Kynar panel after a Piedmont storm.
Granules hold pollen, pine needles and algae far more than a smooth panel, so under the oaks and pines of Mint Hill or the tree-lined streets of Concord the roof will need an occasional soft wash to stay clean, the same way a shingle roof does. Expect some granule shedding in the first year. And a repair means matching a granule colour, which is easier when we keep a few panels from the original run - so we do, and we leave them with you.
Against painted metal shingles, stone-coated steel is heavier-looking and quieter but higher maintenance. Against standing seam it costs a little more per square and has more joints, but clears architectural review boards that reject ribs. Against real tile, it is a fraction of the weight and the cost. If an older stone-coated roof is fading or shedding heavily, a coating is usually not the right fix - the granule surface needs replacement panels, not paint - and we'll tell you that on the inspection.
