Metal Roofing
Metal shingles are stamped steel or aluminum pressed into the shape of shake, slate or tile and installed in interlocking courses. From the sidewalk they read as a traditional roof, which is exactly why they clear architectural review boards that reject vertical panel. They carry the same Kynar finishes and the same 40-plus-year expectations as standing seam, at a similar price, with more labour and less panel.
Metal shingles are individual or multi-shingle panels of stamped steel or aluminum, pressed into the profile of cedar shake, slate or clay tile and finished in the same Kynar coatings as a standing seam panel. They install in interlocking courses with concealed fasteners along the top edge, so like standing seam nothing is exposed to weather. From the sidewalk the roof reads as shake or slate. That is the whole point, and it is why they exist.
Architectural review. A large share of the homes in Huntersville, south Charlotte, Fort Mill and Waxhaw sit in HOAs whose guidelines were written when a metal roof meant a barn, and some boards still refuse any vertical-rib profile on a street-facing slope. A shake-profile metal shingle in a muted colour clears almost all of them, and we prepare the submission with a physical sample and the manufacturer's spec sheet. The same logic applies in Charlotte's local historic districts, where a Certificate of Appropriateness is far easier to obtain for a shingle-look product.
Steel shingles are stiffer and resist hail better, which matters everywhere in the Piedmont. Aluminum cannot rust, weighs less, and is the better choice within a few hundred yards of Lake Norman or Lake Wylie, where humidity sits on a roof overnight. Both carry the same finish warranties from the manufacturer. On a lake house in Mooresville we will usually spec aluminum; on a hail-exposed subdivision roof in Concord, steel.
Installed, metal shingles land in the same range as standing seam or slightly above, because there are many more pieces to set. If the goal is a heavier tile look, stone-coated steel gets there at a similar price with a granular surface that hides hail marks. If the board will accept a rib profile, standing seam gives the same life with fewer joints. All three are quoted on the same visit if you want to compare.
How long does it take? Three to five days on a typical home; more pieces to set than a panel roof.
